[ARCHIVED] "Toss No Mas" Call for Volunteers Saturday, Oct. 16

Toss No Mas

Individual volunteers, groups, and civic organizations are invited to register for this year’s “Toss No Mas” cleanup event that will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021.

Keep Las Cruces Beautiful (KLCB), City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation, and New Mexico Clean and Beautiful programs will host the annual “Toss No Mas” Cleanup, a great opportunity to beautify Las Cruces. The “Toss No Mas” campaign was created in the 1990’s by Cooney-Watson Productions.

After visiting 96 locations across the state, it was discovered litter in New Mexico was found in communities, on average, every six feet! The department found the largest litter accumulations come from people not tying up their garbage bags, tarping their loads, or picking up dropped debris or litter.

A new logo and slogan for this campaign, “Can the Trash” was created by RK Venture, along with a broader message to “Tie it. Tarp it. Pick it up.”

Keep Las Cruces Beautiful will have a centralized location, Young Park, 1905 Nevada Ave., for information, identified locations, and supplies the morning of the event. Hundreds of volunteers participate each year to collect litter at parks, schools, streets, and business properties during the “Toss No Mas” Cleanup campaign.

In past years, we have had more than 1,000 volunteers from local groups and organizations collect more than 16 tons of litter during the annual event. The “Toss No Mas” Cleanup campaign is organized locally by KLCB and is a statewide initiative in partnership with New Mexico True.

Volunteers can pick up supplies from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. the week of Monday, October 11 through Friday, October 15 in the south parking lot at Frank O’Brien Papen Community Center, 304 W. Bell Ave.

All volunteers are encouraged to register online at www.las-cruces.org/Toss-No-Mas-Registration, or call 575/528-4506, or email KLCB@las-cruces.org for information to sign up.

Information about the campaign containing facts about how litter affects our communities, advice on how to tie/tarp loads on vehicles, and ways for people to get involved and volunteer in their neighborhoods can be found at
www.tossnomasnm.com.

Additionally, KLCB reminds individuals, businesses, or organizations they can participate in the Adopt-a-Spot Program in the city. The only requirement for the cost-free service is to organize a cleanup once a month in exchange for a sign with the participants name and a clean stretch of a multi-use path, park, or right-of-way area.
