[ARCHIVED] "Confinement in the Land of Enchantment: Japanese Americans in New Mexico During World War II"

Branigan Cultural Center

The Branigan Cultural Center will present, “Confinement in the Land of Enchantment: Japanese Americans in New Mexico During World War II,” with Victor Masaru Yamada, at 2 p.m. Friday, February 25 live on Zoom.us.

To attend this virtual presentation visit Zoom.us with webinar ID 83093302384 or email education@las-cruces.org to request a link.

The Confinement in the Land of Enchantment (CLOE) Project serves to expand the reach and audience in New Mexico and the U.S. of education about the history of Japanese American internment in the state and to inspire thought and conversation about the issues of citizenship, identity, and civil liberty. The CLOE Project involves researching sites in New Mexico, establishing historical markers and education resources, and provide outreach, discussion, and forums about the history of internment in New Mexico.

Victor Masaru Yamada’s family participated in the “voluntary migration/evacuation program” moving from western Washington to eastern Oregon in spring of 1942. He moved for retirement to New Mexico a decade ago where he has served as a volunteer at a number of non-profit organizations, primarily focused on the protection of civil rights, cultural history, and understanding of Japanese Americans.

These organizations include the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League, Japan America Society of New Mexico, and Asian American Association of New Mexico.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St., is accessible via RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1. Visit the Museums System website at: MUSEUMS | Las Cruces, NM (las-cruces.org) or follow the Las Cruces Museums on Facebook and Instagram @LCMuseums.
