About 34 Las Cruces students enrolled in the City of Las Cruces Weed and Seed program recently participated in a community service project that prepared and distributed food boxes to needy senior citizens.

Two groups of Weed and Seed students, who are enrolled in the third to fifth grades, assisted Loaves and Fishes, Inc., a charitable nonprofit organization administered by the U.S. government, that provides food boxes to the elderly. In a 1.5-hour period on Feb. 9, 2022, the students helped Loaves and Fishes, Inc. assemble 200 food boxes and taped together another 150 boxes.

A major group activity for students in the Weed and Seed program is to regularly participate in community service projects. Weed and Seed organizers said the students enjoyed the activity and are excited about helping Loaves and Fishes, Inc. again.

The Weed and Seed program is conducted year round at the A. Fielder Memorial Safe Haven, 906 N. Tornillo St. A. Fielder Safe Haven was designed to provide young people and community residents with a secure neighborhood facility where children can gather daily in a safe environment to engage in educational activities such as homework and reading, life skill presentations and a variety of recreational activities.

The Weed and Seed program provides age-appropriate after school and summer programming with a unique focus of maintaining the cultural traditions of the community it serves. In addition to community service, other Weed and Seed group activities include creativity and the arts; education; life skills; music appreciation; physical fitness; positive social interaction; team building and teamwork.
