Join us for a new exhibition at the Museum of Art, “American Impressionism: Treasures from the Daywood Collection,” featuring 41 extraordinary paintings by American Impressionists that were originally part of the private collection of Arthur Dayton and Ruth Woods Dayton.
The Dayton’s collected American Impressionist artwork that they felt captured the essence of contemporary American life. “American Impressionism” will be on view from April 29, 2022, to July 23, 2022.
Drawn from the acclaimed collection of the Huntington, West Virginia Museum of Art, “American Impressionism: Treasures from the Daywood Collection” showcases work from a transitional time in American art, approximately 1890s through the 1910s, when artists abandoned the rigors of academic styles and subjects. They turned instead to intimate scenes of the cultivated countryside and figure studies of friends and neighbors.
These subjects reflected the more modern art influences of the French-based Barbizon School, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism. Among the notable artists featured in the exhibition are Robert Henri, George Inness, George Luks, Homer Dodge Martin, Gari Melchers, John Sloan, John Twachtman, and J. Alden Weir.
This exhibition is drawn from the Huntington, West Virginia Museum of Art’s collection of American Impressionism art, collected by Arthur and Ruth Woods Dayton and curated by Christopher Hatten, Senior Curator at the Huntington Museum of Art. It is toured by International Art & Artists, Washington, D.C.
The Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St., is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission fee.
