Las Cruces police are asking for additional witnesses to come forward in Saturday’s shooting on south San Pedro Street that left a man dead and his wife critically injured.
Carlos Picharo, 39, was pronounced dead at an area hospital after the shooting that occurred about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 9. Picharo’s wife, whose name police will not publicly identify since she is the victim of a violent crime, was shot multiple times and remains hospitalized at University Medical Center of El Paso.
James J. Theriault, 80, is charged with one count of first-degree murder, attempted murder, tampering with evidence and conspiracy. Theriault’s 35-year-old son, Cody Theriault, is charged with tampering with evidence, conspiracy, and receipt or possession of a firearm by a felon.
Investigators learned that James Theriault shot Picharo at least once and Picharo’s wife multiple times after a dispute between the neighbors escalated Saturday afternoon.
