The City of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 1 for the Griggs-Walnut Groundwater Plume Remediation Project located at 163 N. Cottonwood Street.
In June 2011, both the Las Cruces City Council and the Doña Ana Board of County Commissioners, in separate actions, approved the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Modified Administrative Order and provided an intent to comply to EPA. The action allowed for the construction of a water treatment facility. The facility extracts the chemical perchloroethylene, commonly referred to as PCE, from groundwater.
The treatment process utilizes an air stripper to expose the impacted water from two off-line municipal wells to oxygen, which dissipates the PCE. The cleansed water is then suitable for drinking.
The public is invited to visit the site to ask questions and tour the facility. Visitors can access the facility from Walnut Street, just south of the Las Cruces Skate Park.
